Masuga Design Now Running on ExpressionEngine
April 22, 2008
It only took more than a year (see this post from March 11, 2007) and three very late nights in a row this last weekend, but masugadesign.com has finally been transitioned off of Wordpress onto ExpressionEngine. It actually wasn’t terribly difficult, but, true to form, I found a million little things that I wanted to update or tweak along the way. As they say, I am now “eating my own dog food”, or “sipping my own champagne.”
Just glad that’s over with, so now we can get back to business. Carry on!

Congrats on making the move to ExpressionEngine! We just went through the same process a few months ago, so I’m intimately familiar with the “million little things”. Having made the move from WordPress, there are certainly pros and cons to ExpressionEngine, but on the whole we’re pleased with it. I was actually just looking for Star Rating plugin for EE and came across your site. Now that you’re on EE, any chance you’ll make an EE plugin for your AJAX star rating? I haven’t attempted to implement into any EE templates yet, but I’ll be giving it a try soon.

@Adam - I do have an idea for an EE ratings module. Solspace already has one, but I think mine would be a nice alternative (their version is $49 per site, I think).
I know the script has been successfully used on EE sites before - though not by me!

Solspace seems to charge for a lot of their EE module/plugins, so I’d love it if there as an alternative! In the interim though, I’ll see if I can get your script up and running. If there are any examples of sites that use your script that you can send over that would be great!

Hey Ryan,
Just snooping arround and found you through EE community and thought of droopping a note.
Site looks great and well alive. :)
@Adam….have you looked at : http://gadgets.silenz.org/index.php/gadgets/item/ee-entry-rating-module/
Thanks Ryan for all the contributions to discussions over in EE…as always…keep up the good work!

Hi Ryan,
I like the re-work of your site on Expresssion Engine. I’m actually doing the same for a site I’m maintaining. I was wondering, what did you use to migrate data from Wordpress to Expression Engine. Any help would be appreciated.

@Dan: You can search the EE Forums for info on that. Basically you convert your WordPress info to MT (Movable Type) format, and then use EE’s “Movable Type Import Utility” located in the Control Panel at Admin > Utilities > Import Utilities.

Hi, I’m just getting started with web design and came across CMS Expression Engine. I have what may be a stupid question, but what are some of the pro’s and cons of using EE instead of a freeware software like Joomla?
Just trying to make the right decisions from the start.

@kirk: I don’t think it’s a Free vs. Paid argument, but what do you need to do? If what you need to do can be done with a free solution, go for it. If EE will handle it, use EE. I don’t know how it is for most people, but my clients don’t blink at a CMS that costs $250. That’s like a fly on the elephant’s rear to some.
There are many arguments to be made for how flexible EE is out of the box. EllisLab has a dedicated team of developers, and EE has a rabid fan base that is extremely helpful - spend any time on the EE Forums and you’ll see what I mean. There are already numerous threads in the Pre-Sales forums asking all sorts of “can EE do this, can EE do that” types of questions. You may want to check that forum out, and search “Joomla” while you’re there and you should find threads titled “Expression Engine vs. Joomla”, “Comparing EE to WordPress and Joomla”, and “Wordpress vs Joomla vs Drupal vs EE”.
Good luck! And if you do decide to go with EE, make sure to check out {devot:ee}, which is my pet project for the EE community.
